Thank you for your replies.
here is the network diagram. its not for an ISP , but a core router for
a medium-sized company with an ethernet broadband connection and 4
departments.

internet-----PC Router/ cisco 3640----- --|--------- 4 private subnets
|--------
|--------- 1 DMZ subnet(mail, web, etc)
If it will be a PC router, we plan to use it as a router/firewall (maybe
proxy?)

The reason i asked for the layout is because there are some cases that
you can get away without buying a cisco router, but we need to know

For such things, a dedicated router such as a Cisco is infinitely
preferable, unless you foresee that the "router" will ultimately used
for much more than just routing in the near future (e.g. doing things
like proxy caching or whatnot). There was a recent thread on a similar
issue (that time concerning GNU/Linux-based PC VPN gateways vs.
dedicated VPN appliances) a month or two ago, and I hope this doesn't
touch off the same arguments all over again.
