Now I got it. A AOC LM725 "special edition" with DVI:

Bought a PC Hub in Gilmore. With TipidPC member discount. :)

First off, with the open source "nv," the refresh rate was wrong. At
1280x1024 native resolution, it was 80 Khz x 75 hz which is the
monitor's max (from the device information? or from the modelines?
didn't find out.) Saw this in the OSD and in Xorg.log.

No noticeable problem in text mode but bad bad flickering in text
mode. Booted into Windows (ha! it's good for one more thing!) and saw
that WMP can play properly at 64 Khz x 60 Hz.

I set HorizSync and VertRefresh to 64 and 60, fixed, no range. Same.
"nv" didn't honor it. Thought of a couple of things but I figured the
easiest way was to get the official closed-source drivers. It needed a
module recompile in CentOS 4.1. Besides that, no hitch. 64x60 was set
properly. mplayer works great. Success!
