Greetings all, For those of you who attended the last PLUG technical seminar, you might be wondering what the hell I was doing lugging an iBook to the talk. Unfortunately, I forgot the dongle that would have allowed me to hook up the iBook to the LCD projector at APC. Maybe next time I will remember to bring it.
I brought the iBook because it is the only notebook that I have access to. It is a dual boot system, with Mac OS X (Panther) and Ubuntu Linux (Hoary Hedgehog) as options. I was planning to demonstrate how Ubuntu Linux looks (not that different from the PC version, really) and in particular how it will look when you activate the tl_PH locale. Again, I will probably have to show this at the next tech seminar along with the other aspects of i18n/l10n that I had skipped. My talk was an introduction to i18n/l10n, but I was unable to demonstrate the actual process of doing i18n and l10n, which I intend to take up in future talks (maybe 1st quarter of 2006?). I still keep Mac OS X around for several reasons. There are some programs that work in Mac OS X only that have no equivalent in Linux (yet). The built-in modem doesn't work under Linux (at least I haven't gotten it to work yet, but if anyone can help, I'd appreciate any links). The iBook I have doesn't have the Airport Extreme WiFi built-in, so I am still looking for a USB WiFi dongle that will work in both Mac OS X and under Linux PPC. I am considering getting a D-Link dongle as it reportedly works under both (as well as on Linux on the ix86). But without these problems, I could very well live with running the iBook on Ubuntu Linux (or Debian) since I am already very much comfortable working under Linux. Mac OS X has its niceties of course. -- ___ Eric Pareja (xenos AT upm.edu.ph) | Information Management Service [IMS] \e/ Network and Systems Administrator | University of the Philippines Manila _v_ [ http://www.upm.edu.ph/~xenos ][GPG: B82E42D9][http://tinyurl.com/68dkm] "Ang hindi marunong magmahal ng sariling wika ay higit pa sa malansang isda."
