The newer Radeons badly suck on Linux in terms of performance (speed,
et.al). The Radeon 7000 series is quite good but it's already showing
its age... and it's only good on uniprocessor systems. Unless you wish
to be stuck with only up to 64MB of VRAM then the older Radeons would
be fine.

On another note, based on personal experience:
SMP + ATI Radeon (even the 7000 series) + X11 = death

This is a known bug for both the X11 code (not being able to handle
SMP that well), and maybe the in-kernel ati driver. Even disabling the
DRI in X doesn't relieve the general flakiness of the system. So if
you've got SMP systems with ATI video chipsets... beware...
