yes, you can use the mkswap to create a new swap space in a
device/partition or file (which is going to be slower). you can use
swapon to immediately use your new swap space or you can edit your
/etc/fstab so your new swap partition will be loaded on boot. read the
manpages of both utilities for more information...

btw, this question might be more geared for the newbie list (not that
the main list has that much traffic the past few days) :)
