/proc/version does NOT tell you the release/version of the distribution that is currently running, which is what the original poster wanted to know. The versions that /proc/version give you are of the Linux kernel (not to be confused with the GNU/Linux distribution), and the compiler that was used to build this particular kernel binary. Please be careful to understand what the original poster wanted before giving advice. Also, you quoted the entire message and just answered with one line.
