I have been blogging about my using Linux: installation, problems,
etc. And I am not really technical =D You could check out my blogs
on http://clair.free.net.ph and search for my posts on Linux. (I also
have some Linux related posts on
http://clair.pinoyweb.net/index.php?s=linux)

I have been using a laptop as well and installing some distros like
Mandrake/Mandriva and Ubuntu have been easy. I just had to make sure
that it would boot from CD so that when the install CD is there, it
would just run. You could select stuff from there.
(Mandrake/Mandriva's interface is really easy to understand and use.
Ubuntu's as well.)

You could try checking out on the Internet for your laptop and the
Linux distributions that have been tested there. I recall that suspend
was problematic on my ThinkPad when using Debian but when using
Ubuntu, it could be put on suspend.
