I don't mind newbie questions as long as they tag it on the email subject ( eg: [newbie] ), just like when posting [OT] questions on the main list, so i can just filter it on my inbox.

Same sentiment with you and Paolo.
It was debated a few years ago on the Debian mailing list to split the
general mailing list from debian-user and a newbie mailing list. It
did not prosper.
It all boils down to one rhetorical question, if you are a Linux
newbie, then how do you know if your question is newbie, general, or
advanced?
A good mandatory reading of the FAQ before joining the mailing list
and searching http://www.google.com/linux before asking questions
would lower the SNR even more.
