I was once a newbie and i remember doing the same thing, asking rather than reading the archive.
The problem is; i need some things done right away and i dont have time to learn the core; so i can just finish my job without understanding the fundamentals.
its not because im lazy, its because i cant understand them -- the terms and methods were too advance for me at that time.
This became a recurring problem for me before; i cant be a newbie forever and depend on the mailing list; thats when i realized i need to learn from the fun-damentals :D -- really learn, I had to read online books.
So for all newbies, go ahead and ask but give a effort to learn yourself, whenever you ask try to mention what you have done, what solutions found online you have tried -- so we dont end up repeating and give you the same solutions online only to find out it doesnt work for your case anyway (like if someone just ask me how to install kannel and i just copy-paste-reply the installation guide at kannel.org :D ).
BTW
I think the howto wiki is great, i guess we can just copy paste the ones already online then just assign people to update it since most howtos i found are just outdated.

FYI, this is already in the works, at least for the website[1]. I've
already placed a howtos link to be filled up once membership
registration commences (as I'd need to keep track of those who'd be
authoring the howtos for accountability purposes). Just be patient...
