domain controller will definitely be slow especially when it is also

the problem will also be aggravated when  the system disk is the same as
the data disk

same disk with the
file server directory.

the machine has a smart array 2dh so when i installed linux the drive appeared as one logical drive, the machine has five 9GB ultra scsi hard drive, is it possible to install e.g. root directory on 1st scsi then next /home which contains the netlogon and profiles and the last drive to contain /var?

the bottleneck is not on the CPU / memory. it's on the disk. you can
monitor the disk IO
speed of the server by executing the command:

     hdparm -t /dev/disk

# hdparm /dev/ida/c0d0

/dev/ida/c0d0:
 readonly     =  0 (off)
 readahead    = 256 (on)
 geometry     = 8711/255/32, sectors = 71081760, start = 0

how can i see the performance of each drive? there's no /dev/sda

performance degradation is noticeable when the IO speed is below
10MBytes/secs.
make it a point to maintain not less than 20MB/secs IO speed during
"peak" times
as your baseline and in order to make the production users happy :)
