Oops, this is another can of worms to open again! ;) Anyhow, you can
take your pick from the many server-oriented distributions in
DistroWatch[1], or in LWN's list[2].  Personally, I would just put
Debian Sarge in it, bake a custom kernel, and tweak just about
everything from sysctl to the boot sequence to get it up and running
just the way I want it ;)

Personally, I'd use the kernel out of the box. It's amazing what the distribution people can do these days..

I've heard the same complaints from the FC4 users at Naga; I don't know
much about what causes this myself, but I suspect one can always do some
rc.d script tweaking and remove unnecessary/unwanted startup action.

Hint: Red Hat/Fedora is slow-booting mostly due to one service: kudzu.
/sbin/chkconfig kudzu off

will fix your problem. No need for rc.d script tweaking. That's for Linux-heads who thrive on unnecessary complexity.

The operative word here is `non-critical'; if you're just using this
caching server for, say, worktime internet browsing, you *could* try
Fedora (as long as you keep your boss informed ;).  Otherwise, if you
have an intranet and would want to speed communications between
departments, I would recommend using a distro with commercial AND
community support.

Methinks everyone doth complains too much about Fedora. I've used it for real revenue generation in an enterprise environment and there's nothing wrong with it. I remember the days when we used Red Hat 5.0 in production -- now THAT was a can of worms (first major distro to use glibc6). But we lived.
