just prevent relaying and spamming . i just want my internal mailserver to communicate with the proxy im about to set up and the proxy will communicate with the rest of the mailservers in the internet. that way, the flow of email should be coming from the proxy to internal and make it more specific to allow email traffic to just 2 computers. am i making sense here ? :-)

When you say security of email, what are you specifically referring to?
Prevent hacking of mailserver?  Prevent relaying?  Allow authenticated
relaying?

Please elaborate on what you exactly wish to accomplish.  i.e.  you want
to protect backend Exchange server
