Yup, got burned too...architecture does not fit well with a multi-process 
design.

But then if I were to do it over again, I'd design the
application/solution so that almost everything resides in one address
space

Had to do the same thing, created a multi-threaded socket server for my BDB data store. Worked well in the end though.
