I'm running ubuntu on an HP nc6230 notebook though I haven't really done a thorough test on the unit (it's an eval set from HP as we're currently sourcing for alternatives to the better-buy-the-ultra-expensive-T43s-as-am-going-eol T42s). Have tested Ubuntu and RH on Fujitsu Lifebooks (including the Fujitsu Siemens line), Dell Ds (400/600), and IBM T and X series with just minor hiccups (acpi stuff and yes, the winmodems too).

My personal notebook, a Compaq V2000, has ubuntu and fedora (on different disks, so the need to swap disks from time to time as and when I feel the itch of switching OSes) and the rig's a workhorse.

Yeah, Thinkpads works well under Linux my favorites Fedora and CentOS well as mentioned just don't even think of using the Lucent WinModem :). Thinkpads also works well on *nix/*BSD.

I used to have a Fujitsu Lifebook, with Mandriva and Fedora and never had any problems :)

Personally I swear by the Thinkpads.  Good experience, and cheap, too, if you consider the R50e models (under P40,000).  Caveat will be the Winmodems because that they come with.  You'll have a heck of a time getting them to work. But this is more the norm rather than the exception for notebook computers.

wether I am agnostic or not - but I'm not quite
sure if I feel that way; hence I must be
meta-meta-agnostic. (I guess)
