The College of Veterinary Science & Medicine (CVSM) of the Central Luzon
State University (CLSU) is the only College in CLSU to be using
Linux/FOSS in at least 90% of all their PCs. Since the late 3rd quarter
of 2005 we (by we, I mean me and the Dean) have gradually migrated from
MS software to Linux/FOSS. We even planned to have a seminar for Linux
beginners. But since its just the two of us planning it, it hasn't
materialized (yet).
Most of the PCs are old, (PII 266MHz/PIII800MHZ/K6-2 500, 32-64MB RAM,
1.5-4GB HDD) so I experimented on different distros before deciding to
use VectorLinux 3 for the old machines, Mandrake 10.2 for the newer
machines (Athlons). and DeliLinux for the AMD K5 machine they still use.
The Dean really loves using Linux, his personal machines (for use in the
College) are installed with Bayanihan 3.1 (for the one in the Dean's
Office. Itried to install something else but he would not let me, he
likes BL3.1's screensavers) and for the one in his laboratory a hard
disk-installed Knoppix 3.7.
We have talked about creating a LUG, and he says that he is willing to
support the proposed LUG by providing the venue/office space. In return
the (proposed) LUG is to provide his college with tech support.
The CVSM is the smallest college of the CLSU, with only around 200-250
students and less than 30 faculty & staff. But hey its a start.
