Actually /var/www is just the default wwwroot in Debian (if you look at
it in a new clean install there should just be a couple of files there.)
It is recommended that you store your real www files inside some
directory in /srv , configure your site configurations (e.g., in
apache2, /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/<your-site-http.conf>) accordingly,
and hide those from local users via some chmod magic.
