Don't do it on anything less than 512MB. I tried VMware-player on a 256MB machine and it fell flat on its face.
Unfortunately, I don't know about VMware-player and Ubuntu VMX image on Windows because, as everyone knows, I don't do Windows ;-)
Seriously, there is a player for Windows, so you can try that out. My friend Carl Sia had it working. But I can't answer any questions about it.
There are several other images you can get: Fedora, DB2, etc. Look in the VMware site.
