We are using a VB-developed billing/meter reading/collection software, connecting via ODBC (ADO) to MySQL 4.0.xx db server running on RH Linux.
MySQL has excellent developer and user support. No experience with mssql though. I believe the OpenSource version is as stable as the commercial version. Vulnerability to SQL injection should be prevented on the application. After all, the DB server will only do what you ask it to.
