In lieu of Sendmail, there are other "brands" of Mail Transport Application that you might also want to try.
1)Postfix ( http://www.postfix.org)
2)QMail ( http://www.qmail.org)
Both are very well documented in their websites and also from other sources. There are even tutorials (also known as "HOWTOs") for specific flavor of Mail Servers that might suit your needs.
