It should work, PROVIDED that the chipsets are also supported by your distro
of choice. I haven't tried this with the more recent Opteron mobos though (I
have a relatively old SMP Opteron setup with a Tyan Thunder K8W mobo and it

More or less. Most distros ship with biarch (unlike Debian which will ship
AMD64 as native 64bit all the way). The good thing about AMD64 is that you
get an x86 compatible chip which can do fast math (no x87 anymore as it uses
the SIMD extensions) and can go higher than 4GB without cheats like PAE.
