I am glad that you are going to try out plunging deeper into Linux :)
Your second question is unclear. What exactly do you have in mind about upgrading 'linux iso' ?
The first question, however, is answerable.
Here's my take. Here are the short steps:
1) make sure that you have the development packages installed in your linux box. For example, you need gcc, glibc, make, etc.
2) download the latest stable kernel.
3) unpack the kernel and configure
4) compile and install
For the detailed explanation, here is a good article that you _MUST_ read in order to survive a kernel compile process. [ http://www.digitalhermit.com/linux/Kernel-Build-HOWTO.html]
And if that does not fit you, you can always use Google for Linux (a.k.a. G4L) to search for better articles. [ http://www.google.com/linux ]
And you can also search the archives of this mailing list to see if your question has been asked in the past. There you can read the replies, and possibly get some helpful tips from our revered linux gurus here. [Searchable Archives: http://archives.free.net.ph]
have a wonderful day!
