I'm just a newbie and I don't know if this'll help, but the MEPIS Linux 6.0 betas (now beta 5) uses the latest Ubuntu kernel (from Dapper Drake). Final MEPIS 6.0 will come out on 20 June 2006. And, of course, MEPIS is Debian based. You may want to give it a try, http://www.mepis.org.
