You can setup an LTSP server and your thin client is connected into it then access your windows server via terminal services, but that would be my approach, others sure have better opinions.

we must retain our WINDOWS server... because of the MSSQL server

is that possible...

SERVER=WINDOWS
THINCLIENT=LINUX
