Cat 5e  is capable of 1000base-T, since its twisted pair.. standard maximum
length of 100 meters. While fiber optics using SX or LX, SX can reliably
extend signal to 500 meter or more, LX extend up to 10 or 20 km. 

You can use Cat 5e thru LAN network, while fiber optic building to building
link.
