i've seen a Compaq Laptop before with 96MB ram, 4GB HDD,
pentium II 233MHz running a command line environment with
a minimal X desktop (TWM). having only firefox installed, he
can browse the web (obviously), send/receive emails (webmail:
gmail, hotmail, etc.), and now he can create docs (G spreadsheets,
writely, calendar, maps, etc) and play online videos, games, etc.

the rest (win32-specific apps) are handled thru an RDP client
(Terminal Service).

i hope it's good enough for you (but always keep those EVDO,
3G, GPRS, WiFi cards with you in order to stay connected).
