it would matter... one of the strength of a centralized security is to
protect those workstations that are incapable to protect or defend
themselves both from insider and outsider attacks...

yeah my thoughts exactly, that's why i also assumed the possibility
that the machine might be serving other purposes by stating "...but
if the domain server is also serving as the antivir / security update
repository which can only be accessed via the domain, then those
machines are missing a lot." (which was snipped)  aside from being
just a plain Domain Controller either using Win32 or Samba+...+...

the case lacks detailed info anyway, for us to assume further.
