we're not talking about security by obscurity. we're talking DEFECT RATE. defects in a FADEC system can cause jet engine failure and thus crashes.

it is interesting to note that of the dozens if not hundreds of aircraft crashes in the past 25 years, only a few (the first few A300's, the B1 bomber's terrain following system) can be blamed on software glitches.

and the company which did the study referenced in my original post DID have access to the source code of all the software they analyzed.

More like its security by obscurity IMHO. I mean how can a close sourced system be evaluated if we cant even see the code. It may pass the standard/known vulnerability check but the developer must have missed something that is uniquely exploitable and wont be checked until some autistic script kiddie hacker hits it.
