Yes, its called "telecommuting." Unfortunately, I don't know much
about local companies that allow for that kind of employment
arrangement, although I suppose you can find more of that in contract
jobs. As an example, my stint at the Google Summer of Code would be
considered as one, as it is technically an employment to my mentoring
institution (OSDL) under the auspices of Google.
Also, many open source foundations like the Gnome Foundation and
Ubuntu regularly post jobs for FOSS developers, many of which do not
really require on-site presence (although some capacity for
international travel would be highly desirable.)
