The problem may be the word format....doc format are being upgraded all the time.  Some versions of .doc are not 'openable' with old Open Office.
Open office 2.0 has bettern ms .doc compatibility

A user of Writer shared this problem with me: he loaded an MS-Word .doc file
using his OpenOffice version 2, and saved it on a diskette still as a .doc
file. He went to another machine with a version 1.1.4 Office Writer to print
the .doc. It wouldn't load: he got a warning "use version 2 to read".

I'm wondering, if it is the same.doc format, why should it matter if version 1
or 2 of Writer is used to read it?

Has anyone else met this problem?
