After numerous reinstalls and an upgrade to Edgy... I found the
reason. Ubuntu has its own package for NVidia modules and others:
under /lib/linux-restricted-modules. This conflicts with a manual
NVidia install.

I'm not yet done fixing it, though. I switched back to "nv" since I
don't need OpenGL.
