To add to that, one of the projects where the GPL does apply and where
you _have_ to "sign over your copyright" is the GNU project (at large)
-- to have a patch included in the main codebase of any GNU project
(i.e. projects under the stewardship of the Free Software Foundation),
you have to sign over your copyright.

Not so with the Linux kernel.
