DISCARD will silently drop mails that will match your rules.
While REJECT (or BOUNCE), as rfc states, will have to notify the
originating sender based on standard smtp reject codes.
Would ERROR also be advisable?
ERROR (or RETRY) will notify the originating sender that a non-delivery
was made, (afaik, if there is no reason code specified, the default
reason given is a next-hop error).
So to go back to your question, "discard" saves only egress bandwidth.
