might be just another dhcp server again. (hope ur the only "admin" in
the network.) someone might have plugged in a "router".

hi!

i run a thinclient system to connect to win2k3 terminal services. id
like to solicit ideas on how to create separate network for the stations
on the same physical layout (if this possible at all).

i have this nagging, intermittent problem when for no seemingly apparent
reason, the terminals would suddenly be disconnected from windows ts. id
like to believe that there's someone in the network that's launch ing
some application that in one way or another kills the terminal's
connection.

i tried run a port scanner, found one dhcp server running elsewhere in
the network, other than the one authorized dhcp server. had to kill the
offending service. the terminals are ok for a few weeks (months?) and
suddenly i get this disconnection problem again. the next day, the
terminals are working fine again. and then the problem re-occurs. i
cannot trace what's causing it, as much as i want to visit all 300++
computers in the network to see what they are running, i can't.

i previously considered vlan for the terminals, but the switches does
not support vlan. i have this setup where a thin-client and a fat
-client are connected to the same switch at the same time. i cannot do
something like, all ts terminal use these and only these switches. i
cannot segregate users, as they spread all over the plant.

what im looking at is, on the same (physical) network, create a separate
network for the thin client devices. where the network traffic is
practically silent, regulated. the devices would still be connecting to
a windows ts server. but they pass through something like a (software)
router.

LAN A
                                   LAN B
10.0.0.x
                             192.168.0.x

         dhcp/tftp 10.0.0.x
               |
ts1 \ |
ts2 --------------------------------- router
---------------------------- windows ts
ts3 / |

+------------------------------- pdc (samba)

i am not a network guy, im not sure if this is valid, or will work.
perhaps you guys have other suggestions.

thank you!
