Heh, sometimes even the manufacturer's WHQL'd (or was it WHCL'd :P)
drivers will simply not work with the corresponding hardware. In my
desktop's early days (that is, before I got around to using Linux) I was
constantly plagued by Windows borking due to an incompatibility between
my video card's hardware/chipset and the supplied drivers--even the
reference drivers didn't help much. Ultimately such an incompatibility
resulted in my video card becoming inadvertently overclocked, thus
physically destroying it.

Nowadays I don't worry about hardware anymore, especially with a stack
of old Linux CDs around ;)

Modems belong to this category too, as such hardware tend to have
software components and/or firmware that's just not free enough to be
used and/or developed extensively by the community.

What's so hard about

  # tar czpf - /home/phb | (cd /home-backup && tar xzpf -)

?

Besides, there's quite a plethora of backup utilities now available for
Linux, quite a lot I won't make mention of them here (save it for
Google.)

This is more of a PEBKAC problem than an OS problem. This goes for the
rest of the points.
