IN ESSENCE:

   * *BSD Fake raid is equivalent to Linux software RAID
   * Fake raid/software RAID  =/= hardware RAID
   * Having a generic driver means that you're duplicating:

     a) functionality -- you have to essentially fake RAID at the
        software level, even if the hardware *should* support it
     b) effort -- the hardware should be handling RAID, and not the
        software (at least that's the idea)

Also having no or poor documentation means that developers are forced to
go use that generic fake raid implementation. It'll work, sure, but
generally suboptimally (YMMV though)
