The conclusion here is UFS sucks because it by design is flawed.
Nothing more, nothing less. And since the BSD kernel still uses it by
default shows how much better Linux has become as far as being
technically superior is concerned.

yeah it sucks because sunOS/solaris, system V release 4, HP-UX, tru64 unix just to name a few used UFS for their filesystem... it even extended by these commercial unix vendors by adding some proprietary extensions to take advantage of it... sun microsystem created UFS logging which brought filesystem journaling to UFS...in fact the native linux ext2 filesystem was inspired by UFS... yeah right UFS sucks because these commercial unix vendors used UFS....

your sync problem is not caused by UFS per se.... neither the sync() api itself... i dont want to explain this further.. it was properly documented on the freebsd site... i just want you to find out why...

As for the SMP code being new, that shows how slow the development is
in the BSD kernel trees and how way ahead Linux kernel development is
as far as symmetric multi-processing is concerned.

not slow really... this is due because of the Giant lock originally designed to all sub-systems of freebsd system that it takes major overhaul of the entire kernel to convert from giant lock to fine-grained locking... they working on KSE 1:1 and M:N threading... freebsd SMP architecture has been significantly impacted by the design and implementation strategies of the solaris operating system which is the leader when it comes to SMP technology... wait and see when prime time comes for freebsd SMP...

Why should I bother, when I can get the latest and greatest
technically superior solutions in Linux?

hehehehe you made a ridiculous statement here... there is no such thing as *greatest* technically superior solutions in linux.. there is *only* a better solution for your needs in linux... is linux the greatest technically superior solution for .NET environment?

If you actually care to check, Linux kernel development has been
better than ever. 2.6.20 is coming out soon, and packs more than any
other OS kernel can even pronounce.

hehehehe another ridiculous statement.... would you like this to compare with microsoft operating system?

That being said, on technical merits Linux will always IMNSHO beat any
BSD kernel in aspects that matter: performance, stability, and
efficiency.

yeah right.. that is why netcraft stats says that for the number of consecutive years the most reliable and stable servers are still freebsd...

If you want to argue, show me code and let's see which technical
solution is better than the other. Then tell me again why BSD is
better than Linux.

i dont want to argue this.. i just want to encourage you to know the strengths of the BSD family as the orignal poster made a statement why bsd rocks!

i just want to say something about operating system... there is no such thing as the greatest or perfect operating system.... simply because operating systems are made thru design decisions based on *trade-offs*... trade-off such as *time versus space* for example just to name a few... if there is a trade-off.. there will be no perfect nor the greatest OS will ever exist on this planet... that is why there is always a pros and cons for every operating system..

with regards to bsd family... freebsd has a long standing reputation as providing both high performance network facilities and high levels of stability especially under high loads... openbsd aims for strong security and code purity... netbsd aims for maximum portability to other hardware... dragonflybsd aims for high performance and scalability from UP to SMP..

oh.. for linux fanatics here... i just want you to know that BSD is Dying... :->

fooler.
P.S. our akamai servers just arrived last week and guess what OS has been used? it's openbsd!
+ for every problem, there is a solution that is simple, elegant and wrong.
