it is still pretty weird why it didn't work the first time. if indeed that nic is based on 8139 as http://en.opensuse.org/HCL/ Network_Adapters_(Wired) says... it should have worked in the first place since 8139too is common enough or perhaps there was a snafu mandriva's device detection..? oh well, it works now.
