(Me using a SmartBro connection right now at a client here in Pasay)

No special configuration is required. As long as your hardware is
supported, it should work.

Were you given the username and password for his SmartBro connection?
Once you try to browse to any website, the SmartBro captive portal would
intercept your request and force you to login. Then you'd have to
deactivate your wireless interface upon successful authentication and
activate it again for the connection to work.

Thanks to all replies. I had a chance over the weekend to retry my
friend's SmartBro connection, and this time I was able to connect to
the Net just as you and others have described (except for the part
about deactivating the wireless interface: I believe I brought the
Ethernet connection down and up before attempting to surf.)

Now I'm not sure what went wrong during my first attempt. Maybe I just
had the misfortune of catching SB at one of its downtimes. Anyway it
appears I now have the option of choosing between SB and SkyDSL
(untested with Linux ATM) for our brodband connection at home.
