Or more importantly, as long as the computer's not "writing" data on it. Extra
caution specially on big files, because most modern OS's cache the
data. so you don't
actually see any progress bar any more. "unmounting"  in Linux and
"safely removing" in
windows is actually an offshoot of corrupted diskettes which were
removed from the drive before the cache was completely written by the
OS.
