Is there a way that the DHCP server could authenticate which machine is authorized to lease an IP? I've read that we can match specific MAC addresses to a specific IP address but what if an unauthorized machine is attached into the network i could still lease any IP automatically within the range.
That is not the OP's problem. The issue is that there is a rogue DHCP server on the net that conflicts with the "official" DHCP server, thus, clients get addresses from the rogue server. To the OP: check out NetSQUID <http://netsquid.tamu.edu/>. (Haven't tried it yet, but worth looking at.) -- Ian Dexter R.
