using a different YM ID, pursuade him to click on a URL (p*rn?)
that links to your personal web server or to any site where ip
logging is installed.

after which, you can trace the ISP that the suspect is using.
and if you have the "right connections", you can even determine
the address and contact info.

but before you rejoice, you need first to coordinate with the
proper authorities for an entrapment operation (assuming your
friend previously filed a police report and that the device is of
high value).

let's just hope that your friend have the necessary serial
numbers, that the laptop is insured and have no immediately
accessible personal identifiable information (yikes).
