I discovered that the few Linux users of Ateneo QC, namely Dr. Paulito Palmes and Mr. Eric Vidal, are using Debian Unstable, and are quite satisfied with the stability of "unstable". So I decided to switch from Ubuntu LTS to Debian ETCH, on my way to "Unstable". I downloaded the ETCH 180MB netinstall iso, burned the CD and installed Debian with that CD. It helped that I had a broadband connection, so I was able to complete the installation of workstation, web server, and database server in around two hours.
In my experience running Unstable is looking for trouble, especially when you're running a web server. (For that everybody will recommend using the dated "Stable" distribution.) That's why it's called "Unstable" and nicknamed "Sid" (the kid who likes to break toys in Toy Story. I use Testing (is it still Etch?). I'm preparing to upgrade to AMD64 on a Sempron still running 32-bit kernel and userland. I now have a relatively fast DSL connection (compared to dialup ;). However the service is flaky, so I decided to download at least the first of the 3 Etch installation DVD images via the preferred jigdo (jigsaw-download) method (http://www.debian.org/CD/jigdo-cd/). _________________________________________________ Philippine Linux Users' Group (PLUG) Mailing List [email protected] (#PLUG @ irc.free.net.ph) Read the Guidelines: http://linux.org.ph/lists Searchable Archives: http://archives.free.net.ph
