Does lsmod show the modules you tried to load?  I think the most
obvious reason is that the standard Ubuntu kernel doesn't have these
modules built in by default.  Zip drives such as what you've got are
fairly rare creatures in this day and age, and I don't think it's
all that unusual to see that the kernel module supporting them isn't
included in many stock kernels.  If you really want it, you may need to
build a custom kernel.
