I used to do something similar. Since I usually hosed my setup quite a
lot, way back when I was constantly compiling the latest and greatest
kernels, I would have a tiny Slackware install that I'd boot off from
whenever I did hose the kernel compile.

Hmm... maybe later-day systems *should* have something similar, eh? A
"rescue" partition, similar to the ones newer laptops have for Windows.
