Operative word is "cursory." The Firefox WAP extension is useful, but not too useful. A lot of WML passes Firefox but doesn't pass the handset test.
Also many of the phone browsers use UCS-2 character set, which AFAIK is not (or badly) supported on Linux/Firefox. So stuff like Bengali font would display properly on Firefox but not on the phone. If the OP is serious about rolling out an application, s/he would be obliged to test it on a wide variety of phones. The WURFL project is very good in this regard, best handset detection in the open-source world. But nothing beats handset testing.
