Subject: [plug] fixing a box that won't boot

hi guys,

i need help on how to recover/make a linux box work again. the system suddenly
stops responding, you can't login, all the services/daemons stopped so I did a
hard reboot and suddenly my fedora 5 won't start anymore, it got stuck on the
checking filesystems process and produced this error: "
fsck.ext3: Attempt to read block from filesytem resulted in short read while
trying to open /dev/VolGroup01/LogVol00"

I need to recover the databases that i failed to backed up :(

is there a way to make the box work again? i tried booting to the cd installer
and entered linux rescue and no i have idea what's next.

TIA
