Microsoft’s Kiss of Death

"As he was yet speaking, behold a multitude; and he
that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before
them, and drew near to Jesus, for to kiss him. And
Jesus said to him: Judas, dost thou betray the Son of
man with a kiss?" (Luke 22:47-48)

Kiss of JudasIt was with a deep sense of disappointment and foreboding
that I pondered the implications of Microsoft’s latest move (Microsoft
Signs Linux Deal with Xandros) in its war on Linux and the free/open
source software (FOSS) movement. It looks like the generals in Redmond
haven’t forgotten one of the most effective classic war strategies ever:
Divide and Conquer.

Why should Microsoft even bother to enter into a patent-protection deal
with any open source developer or distributor? In this latest deal,
Microsoft isn’t even licensing any patent rights from Xandros (there
doesn’t seem to be anything to license). It is, however, in an
oh-so-generous move, promising not to sue Xandros customers over patent
claims (dubious as thery are). Not that there would be a whole lot of
customers not to sue; Xandros isn’t even in the top 20 most popular Linux
distributions (more like in 37th place in the last month) according to
Distrowatch.
