my bad. yes. grub is always hard drive number minus 1.

hehehe. it's not ubuntu's fault. you'd find that no one actually  
explains grub's naming convention until you google for it.

well not really. people do it all the time on ubuntu, fedora... etc.  
etc. actually... the speed performance between a source-based distro  
and a binary one is debatable and highly religious, which is really  
beside the point.
the thing is, you CAN compile small or huge programs on ubuntu or any  
other binary distro and people do it all the time... heck if you  
couldn't do that... what good is linux for anyway or any OS for that  
matter?
