Do you still need lecturers for linux? Can you brief me more on the
target audience, and when would these be held? I can offer my time on
saturdays to help.

well if you just want to stop/start a service, just use

# /etc/init.d/service_name stop|stop

but for a more elegant way of doing it, use:

# update-rc.d -f script_name remove
