Getting SIGSEGV when compiling the kernel? bad memory. Or, overheated
CPU (check the heat sink compound).

You can get the APIC related SMP issue even on (some) uniprocessor
machines. Also Core Duo CPU's are treated as SMP as they really are
multiprocessor machines.
